What a pre-COVID-19 rain barrel distribution day looked like.
To help conserve water, Aquarion Water Company is selling 60-gallon rain barrels designed to fit under a house’s downspout.
The barrels, which are used, cost $75 and would catch rainwater off of the roof. “Customers can collect and store water for use in a garden whenever it rains,” the company said in an announcement.
“It takes just one quarter-inch of rainfall on an average roof to fill the barrel and provide water to use during dry periods, even when restrictions are imposed on water usage. The usage of rain barrels can help conserve water and reduce water bills.”
The barrels are “upcycled,” the water company says — which basically means that they’re made from used material refitted to a new purpose. According to the YouMatter.com website, upcycling is “the conversion of waste materials to something useful or valuable.”

If you want to get one, you need to order online by May 6 at the latest, then pick up the barrel sometime between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., Saturday, May 14, near the Darien EMS-Post 53 building (part of the parking lots between the railroad tracks and highway at Noroton Heights Railroad Station).
Customers can order barrels online at www.aquarionwater.com/rainbarrels. Orders must be received by May 6, 2022. Pickup locations will be subject to COVID-19 restrictions.
