Professional Tool Reviews for Pros

Battery-powered lawn mowers are more legitimate gas replacements than ever before. The pain point remaining is how much runtime you have onboard. The Makita ConnectX 21-inch self-propelled lawn mower takes direct aim at that problem.

Makita goes after the runtime issue with its ConnectX 1200Wh backpack. It’s like having a little more than 13 of the 18V LXT 5Ah batteries in one pack. Makita isn’t the first to have a backpack battery, though. Part of what makes this one special for the ConnectX lawn mower is that it attaches directly to the top of it— and you don’t have to tether yourself to it with a cord.

When it comes to runtime, you can mow up to 3 continuous hours. For the way most professional crews use their walk-behind mowers to supplement their ZTs, it’s enough to get through an entire day.

The ConnectX power supply runs at 36V/40V max to operate the mower, a string trimmer, and blower currently. With the correct adapter, it’s capable of running any of Makita’s 18V X2 (36V) LXT or 40V max XGT tools as well.

If you happen to have the PDC01 LXT Backpack Power Supply, it mounts on and runs the ConnectX mower as well.

The mower itself has a build very similar to the commercial XML08 we reviewed a while back. Here are some of the highlights:

As a professional-grade mower, the Makita CML01 runs $949.00 as a bare tool and the power supply is another $1399. Like Makita’s other lithium-ion tools, the warranty runs 3 years on both the mower and the power supply.
