Apple Mac Studio is now our dedicated DaVinci Resolve machine - comments

Productivity and content-creation software (even game creation), on the other hand, are used by people who have real jobs. Gaming for a living is not a real job.

Thank you for the great review. It's entertaining to see the weirdos who have such strong opinions, even though they personally have not even been close to a Mac Studio.

My point was that the build from the article isn't the most performance possible when the budget limit is the price of a Mac Studio. > "show me that build in Euro prices" Your list has many overpriced parts. I got €1870 on PCPartPicker Germany (https://archive.ph/ECjmn). > "the original configuration had a 12GB - more RAM is better for video editing." Puget Systems says 8GB of VRAM is enough for a 4K timeline resolution (https://www.pugetsystems.com/recommended/Recommended-Systems-for-DaVinci-Resolve-187/Hardware-Recommendations#GPU), but you're likely right that the 3060 is faster here since DaVinci Resolve currently favors Nvidia GPUs. Switching the 6600 XT for a 3060 would only bring the price up to €1890 (https://archive.ph/NHbQp). I'd like to reiterate that I have nothing against Apple's products if they work better for you. I understand the frustrating crashes that sometimes happen with DaVinci Resolve on Windows (which I've also experienced while having barely used Resolve), and I understand how powerful Apple's processors are—especially with video editing. With my original comment, I only wanted to show that the build in the article was unoptimized in terms of performance per dollar.

[deleted post] I'm a Software Engineer. And again, the time those videos take to render doesn;t means you need to stay idle watching them render. You can go somewhere else and do other stuff while it finishes. And I'm not trolling anyone here: Mac Studio is too expensive for what it is. I know some people use MacOS bc it's comfortable for them or they have been years on it, and for those people I would suggest to stick to the base products, without paying too much. And at this point, to wait for M2 if possible, since that's coming on June probably.

if they keep the studio for 5 years and resell it at half price, they will reach the same price as a window pc or they can even save some money for a new model. I would have gone with the studio too if I was a professional. .

kek, 17 Apr 2022 You can code on any Windows PC. but consumes so much ram

kek, 17 Apr 2022 You can code on any Windows PC. Fun fact: You can code on your Android too (using termux). Even KaiOS (using websites like repl.it) can be used for the same purpose (which I am pretty sure in your case is just beginner level, few 100 lines of code, at most) Why do you even need PC for?

Video editing is really mac top value. With their stability, robust feature, and optimization, hard for other OS to compete. If what I do is mainly video editing, I probably also use mac.

You wouldn't get a consistent, long term warranty for the entire machine if you built towers yourself, either, since each of their component have been manufactured by different companies and come with their own warranty services.

once apple ... always apple for the future ... main reasons are feeling of simplicity and speed what i know from 80386 era up until now ... matrox graphic is the big name for video and photo editing and display, cirrus logic processor has withdrawn, back then, oxygen video card, powered by cirrus logic, is scary monster in video editing ... whereareas nvidia and ati are big names in gaming, back then are diamond multimedia and 3dfx

I get the 'it just works' thing. A PC also works, but it requires a bit more maintenance and knowledge maybe. But I prefer that above giving money to a 3 trillion dollar company making 150 billion $ profit to which you have now contributed. Congrats. Soon everyone will use their crap and choise will no longer be an option. They can charge 10.000$ for it and people still will pay. It will become like an overpriced trabant :D

I agree that Apple's M1 processors are great in many areas, but I disagree with this statement from the article: "A quick check online shows that we could've built a Ryzen 9 5900X machine with a 12GB Nvidia RTX 3060 and 32GB of RAM for slightly less than the Mac Studio." For $160 less than the base-model Mac Studio, you can get a PC with a 5950X, 6600 XT, 64GB RAM, and 2TB of Gen4 NVMe storage (https://pcpartpicker.com/list/pFfv3y). This gets you four cores/eight threads more and twice as much RAM as the PC mentioned in the article. In the linked parts list, I've included a 5-pack of Arctic's P12 PWM PST fans since we don't want the machine to be "much noisier" than the Mac Studio. If you'd rather have more GPU horsepower, you could also get a computer with a 12700K, 3070 Ti, 64GB RAM, and 2TB of Gen4 NVMe storage for slightly less than the base-model Mac Studio (https://pcpartpicker.com/list/rQzfv3). This has a significantly faster GPU compared to the PC from the article (~50-70% more performance than a 3060). Like the other build, this one has Arctic P12s and a high-airflow case. Again, I understand that Apple's CPUs have many advantages, but the PC configuration in the article is rather unoptimized in terms of getting the most performance per dollar. Both of the builds I linked would be better than the 5900X/3060/32GB RAM computer in the article, and both cost less than the cheapest Mac Studio (while having twice as much RAM and four times the storage). Also, the statement that a PC would be "much noisier" is inaccurate—most builds can be near-silent with a decent fan setup and a simple fan curve.

The underside looks better than the topside? Who could've known!

I guess GSMA doesn't like using the most powerful specs for the money. If they went and looked at benchmarks and real world tests on the fastest CPU and GPU on Notebookcheck, they would be using an Intel Alder lake i9 or i7 H/K + and Nvidia 3080 TI instead of the poorly performing Mac Studio. Mac Studio is all hype.
